Welcome to this exclusive interview where we explore the beautiful world of the Intercontinental Maldives Resort, a luxury destination nestled in the breathtaking Maldives. Known for its crystal-clear waters and exceptional hospitality, this resort offers a unique blend of relaxation and adventure, making it a top choice for luxury travelers seeking a lavish escape. Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with General Manager Reinhold Johann, who will share with Lana Steux insights into what makes this destination truly special.
What motivated you to pursue a career in hospitality, and how did your journey lead you to become the General Manager of the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort?

It’s been quite a journey! I was born into the industry, as my parents owned a small restaurant. I began my career as a chef, growing up in a small village that sparked my curiosity about the world beyond. I traveled across Europe, then ventured into Asia and the Middle East, exploring various culinary cultures. After hotel school, I shifted toward management, gaining the skills I needed to move up in the industry. My passion for bringing people together in a unique, culturally rich environment led me to pursue my dream of becoming a General Manager. Now, with over 22 years of experience, I’m proud to lead our hotel and continue doing what I love.

What do you admire most about working in the Maldives, and how does the environment influence your management style today?

The Maldives is truly one of a kind – there’s nothing else like it in the world. The stunning beaches, swaying palm trees, and the rich blend of cultures from around the globe create a vibrant atmosphere. The year-round warm climate makes the guest experience even more enjoyable. While many think the European winter months are the best time to visit, I’ve found that the Maldives is a fantastic destination at any time of year. Though occasional rain may occur, it doesn’t detract from the overall experience, making it a great place to visit in every season.

Could you share a memorable guest interaction that has impacted you during your career? How has guest feedback led to significant changes in operations or service at your resorts?

There have been countless memorable interactions, as each guest is unique. I make it a priority to greet them both upon arrival and departure, and I strive to connect with them every day. These interactions are key. By understanding their individual preferences, we’re able to tailor our services to meet their needs. Being in such a unique environment is incredibly motivating which makes each interaction even more rewarding.

Based on your personal experience, what are some of your favorite activities in the Maldives that you recommend to guests?

The Maldives offers an incredible range of activities. As a passionate diver, I cherish the vibrant underwater world here – every dive is a new adventure. Even just sitting by the water and watching the marine life is absolutely mesmerizing. Beyond diving, we offer a wide range of recreational options from relaxing spa treatments to exciting excursions, ensuring there's something for everyone.
Guests are often amazed by just how much there is to do on the island, as there’s always something going on around the island.

Our location in the Raa Atoll, close to the Baa Atoll, gives us a real edge, especially when it comes to unique opportunities like swimming with manta rays year-round, with the added benefit of supporting the valuable research conducted by the Manta Trust.

What unique operational challenges do hotels in the Maldives face, and how do you address them?

Operating in such a remote location comes with its own set of challenges. We rely on our own water and electricity, and managing a diverse, multicultural team requires careful coordination. Environmental factors and logistical hurdles, such as flight delays, are common as well. We place a strong emphasis on crisis management and ensure our team is always prepared to handle any situation that may arise. Despite these challenges, the beauty of our surroundings makes it all incredibly rewarding.

How does your hotel incorporate sustainable practices to minimize environmental impact, considering the delicate ecosystem of the Maldives?

We are deeply committed to minimizing our ecological footprint. We rely on solar power, enforce strict waste management practices, and encourage energy-saving measures throughout the island. We've completely eliminated plastic bottles and compost our food waste to support a circular system. Our ongoing goal is to explore new and innovative ways to reduce our environmental impact and protect this precious ecosystem.

What does luxury mean to you today?
Luxury is hard to define, but for me, it’s all about time. In today’s fast-paced world, time is something people often feel they don’t have enough of. Here on the island, we encourage our guests to take the time they need to relax and truly unwind. Our goal is to anticipate their needs before they even express them, and when we succeed, it creates a truly special experience.
